  • ( ) Hatton plans to get back on track

MANCHESTER, England -- Ricky Hatton wants to prove he has moved beyond his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. He sees his bout against Juan Lazcano as the perfect opportunity.

Hatton fights Lazcano tonight for the lightly regarded IBO light-welterweight title. But a lot more than the title is at stake as Hatton moves back to a more comfortable weight after losing his first fight in 44 bouts to Mayweather at welterweight.

The Englishman is thinking ahead to a rematch with Mayweather or maybe a shot at Paulie Malignaggi, who defends his IBF light-welterweight title against Lovemore N'Dou on today's undercard.

The fights will take place before an expected 55,000 fans at City of Manchester Stadium, and the British fighter plans to feed off the huge support.

"Everybody is pointing the finger a little bit, saying, 'His lifestyle has finally caught up with him.' I want to go out with a little bit of defiance," Hatton said. More>>

  • ( ) Central Office Reorg in New RCSD Budget Plan

Rochester's City School superintendent is making a few changes to his nearly $700 Million budget proposal.

Jean-Claude Brizard is calling for a central office reorganization that would cut 100 positions. He's also calling for more funding that would improve six underachieving schools in the so-called "Dream School" initiative.

The amendments also include proposals aimed at improving graduation rates and helping those who have already dropped out.

There are 34,000 students in the Rochester City School District. If current statistics hold up, only 39 percent of them will graduate. The district's superintendent and the school board hope these budget adjustments will begin to address what's been an ongoing problem.

"You've got to work at them differently and be willing to say we're not giving up on you. More>>

  • ( ) Woman turns sons' illness into hope for others

Barbara Pasternak's 10-year-old son had just stepped off the ice after wrapping up a playoff game and fainted in his mother's arms.

"He was feeling very tired, lethargic after the game," she said.

Before she knew it her son, Bobby, was taken to The Hospital for Sick Children and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, which was formerly called juvenile diabetes.

Bobby spent five days in the hospital, save for a few hours after doctors allowed the youngster to leave to finish the playoffs, Pasternak said.

    "Now he's six-foot six-inches and a healthy 24-year-old guy," she said.

But Bobby wasn't Pasternak's only child to be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Just more than a year after Bobby was told the news, 13-year-old Jesse was also diagnosed with the disease. More>>
